Frosty pillows, December 5, 2013

Snow blankets the landscape, at once deadening and amplifying sounds. There is a stillness and a quiet in the air, making any noise seem deafening. Snow squeaks underfoot.

Moose lick road salt that has accumulated on cars. Small animals have started creating networks under the snow in the subnivean environment, taking advantage of this natural insulation.

Winter is here.
